Hey France! Excuse Me for Barging In!

Written by Jo Beynon.

I recently had the opportunity this past year to take a “barge trip” in central Burgundy with nine other couples, and what a wonderful form of luxury travel to enjoy! If you are looking for a relaxing vacation with fine food and excellent wines, a new destination with beautiful scenery each day, and the ability to experience this and never leave your lodging- then canal and river cruising is a trip you must experience!

We flew nonstop from Detroit to Paris, via Northwest Airlines, and then chose to travel on the high-speed train from Gare de Lyon rail station to Dijon where we joined the rest of our new group. The train provided us time to unwind and relax before arriving at the barge and tosee a part of France we had never before.

We cruised with the L’ Abercrombie for 6 nights from Vandenesse-en Auxois to Dijon through vistas of castles, wildflowers, vineyards and small French villages. We had touring bikes to ride along the tow paths as the barge cruised slowly towards the next village, or we could bike or walk into the quaint villages along the way. Partial day coach excursions with escorts were provided to visit Chateau’s, vineyards, medieval wine cellars, historic city centers, and the 15th century charity “Hotel Dieu”.

Our Captain and staff were all delightful young people from Europe and Australia ran the barge with comfort and ease. They all provided their specific expertise from the Chef to the Captain to the Wine Steward to housekeeping. Cabins, though a little small, were comfortable with built-in twin beds and a complete bath area with shower. All cabins were cleaned daily and prepared with fresh linens.

You can charter the entire barge for your personal group of family and friends, or simply choose to cruise on your own and enjoy the opportunity of meeting new friends. Call or email me today with questions or for more details!
