The Magic of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Written by Marcia Bethea.

Two songs help to paint the magic of Rio: “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Copa, Copacabana”. Believe me, walking both these beaches, seeing Sugar Loaf, and the view from Corcovado (Christ Statue) brought the magic ALIVE when I visited with my sister in July. Considered to be ‘winter’ the weather was always around 70 degrees.

One issue that is frequently of a concern while traveling to Brazil is safely. At no time did we feel unsafe! The people were friendly and helpful. Taxies were plentiful (both the yellow and blue) and the variety of food is any gourmet’s dream! Brazil BBQ is a wonderful meal treat! Endless meats (or you could go seafood) dishes brought to your table and sliced from a 3-foot skewer. Try Marius on Leme Beach..they have both a meat (carne) and seafood restaurant.

We flew Varig, the Brazilian airline, out of Miami on a direct flight to Rio. It is an easy 8 hours with only 1-hour time difference! NO JET LAG! Our ground transportation was there to meet us and during the drive from the airport through Old Town to Copacabana our driver carried on a lively descriptive dialogue. By the time we reached our hotel the Pestana Rio and 45-minutes later, we had been informed of many tidbits to make our stay memorable.

Before departing Brazil, we flew to Iguassu Falls where Argentina and Brazil share a beautiful confluence of rivers creating spectacular waterfalls. How about 270 + falls in a 2 mile area! Wonderful! Do try the boat ride…not like the Maid of the Mist but just as refreshingly wet!

I am counting the days until I can return! Roundtrip air/hotel with daily breakfast for 6 nights ran around $1,500 per person… ask for details.
