A Virgin in Las Vegas

Yes, there is a first time for everything. Including your first trip to Las Vegas. When the opportunity came to celebrate my birthday and take my husband for his first trip to Las Vegas, we both jumped at it. Being only my second trip and Alan’s first, we wanted to see and do as much as possible, not knowing when we would get back.

Due to complicated scheduling, we were only able to be in Las Vegas for approximately 36 total hours. We flew from Lansing on the new Allegiant Airlines nonstop service. We flew out on a Friday morning and had to return on the Saturday night/Sunday morning redeye flight. The service and flight times were great. No matter how long you spend in Vegas, I think you never could see or do it all, but we sure tried!

Upon our arrival we claimed our luggage and proceeded to our hotel, The New Frontier, located on the North End of the strip. We knew we would not be in our room much and wanted a good location for a good price and that is just what we got. The staff at the Frontier was fantastic! We absolutely recommend the Fajita Feast for Two and Margarita’s Cantina. It was delicious and more than enough for two, even if one of you has a big appetite! We decided we would definitely stay there again.

After checking in to our room and throwing our luggage in the room (no time to unpack on this trip!), we checked out the casino, of course. Neither of us are big table game people, so we stuck to our favorite, video slot games. I got an emergency call that put me to work for a couple of hours (a travel agent’s work is never done). During this time I also made our reservations for a show. My husband is a BIG fan of the Rat Pack, so we went to the Tribute to Frank, Sammy, Joey and Dean at the Greek Isles Hotel & Casino. This was located slightly off the strip, but within walking distance from our hotel. We had a fantastic time. The performers were great, and the audience was able to participate some and that made the show that much more memorable. After the show, we checked out the casino there and hung out with the locals at the bar. We then took a leisurely walk back to our hotel.

After changing to more comfortable clothes, we took a cab downtown to see the Fremont Street Experience. Unfortunately, the show runs only until midnight and we got there too late. We checked out the downtown casinos for a bit and then took a cab back to our hotel for 3 hours of sleep!

The next morning, we had breakfast and left the hotel to explore as much of The Strip as possible. We stopped at many of the favorites along the way, including Caesars Palace, Treasure Island, and many more. Then we had to return to our hotel for the final faze of our whirlwind weekend.

Now for a little background, besides being fans of Old Time Vegas and the Rat Pack, Alan and I are huge hockey fans. Michigan State Hockey in particular. It just so happens that in doing a search of ongoing events while we would be in Las Vegas, I discovered that the annual Frozen Fury, a pre-season game between the Los Angeles Kings and Colorado Avalanche. It also just so happens that a friend and former Michigan State player, John-Michael Liles was drafted by the Avalanche and still playing “up” with them at the time of this game. Naturally, we just had to try to see this. We were able to get tickets and enjoyed the first two periods of the game before we had to return to our hotel to get our luggage and get to the airport for our red-eye flight home.

We arrived tired but very thrilled by all of our wonderful experiences. Remember, the first time, may not be the last or the best but it is always memorable!
