Discover the Many Faces of Italy

I was fortunate enough to travel to my all-time dream country-Italy. A tour company sponsored a trip to Italy for travel agents to learn more about the destination. Italy was much more beautiful than I had imagined.

The first place we visited was Venice-a city built on water. Venice floats dreamlike on canals and lagoons. There are no cars in Venice. The forms of transportation are water taxi (motor boat), gondolas, or walking. You walk over small bridges, past winding waterways, to the Doges’ Palace, the San Marco square and inside the San Marco Basilica, decorated with marble, and then on to the Bridge of Sighs. Venice is known for its Venetian glass.

Florence, the grand city of the Renaissance, was the second city we visited. The stirring sights of Florence include the Academia Museum where we saw Michelangelo’s David. Giotto’s Belltower, Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise, and the Duomo. You may wish to take an optional tour of the Uffizi Gallery, the finest collection of Renaissance paintings in the world. Or take an optional excursion to Pisa to see the famous Leaning Tower.

On our jaunt to Rome we made a stop in Siena. The narrow streets lead to the Piazza del Campo, the center of town. It is a unique in this charming town of little shops and boutiques with its medieval towers and walls.

Rome, the Eternal City, was by far the most memorable of all the cities visited. We enjoyed seeing the Colosseum, the Forum, the Palatine, and the Capitoline hills. With a stop at Vatican City, we saw St. Peter’s Square and the famous window that the Pope waves from, and toured St. Peter’s Basilica, where I saw the “Pieta” by Michelangelo. There are so many sights to see! Rome is an easy city to get around on your own. I ventured out and saw the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, and tossed a coin in the Trevi Fountain to guarantee my return to this wonderful country.
