When you leave the Cancun Airport you come upon two signs, one directing you left toward the resort strip known as Cancun, and the other pointing right toward the fastest growing vacation destination in Mexico-Riviera Maya.

Increasingly visitors are turning right, eager to discover one of the most beautiful tropical destinations in the world. Its tranquil and serene atmosphere is something you won’t find in tourist Mecca’s like Cancun. It is a stunning region for those who seek closer contact with nature and infinite possibilities for exploration and enjoyment.

The options for accommodations, activity and dining are incredibly diverse within this paradise. With hotels ranging from small 20-room inns to huge resort complexes with more than 2,000 rooms, the Riviera Maya has something for everyone. Not one of the resorts are more than six years old and most are all-inclusive, which helps feed the demand for that type of resort experience.

Visitors can enjoy many activities along the Riviera Maya, such as wind surfing, deep sea fishing, trips in kayaks, horseback riding, golf, as well as simply becoming one with nature while resting on a pristine beach. In addition to a short ferry ride to Cozumel, there are two parks along the coast, perfect for a day of adventure. Xcaret is an eco-archaeologists amusement park that offers a great array of activities, from floating in underground rivers to swimming with dolphins. XelHa, farther south, is an incredible natural aquarium famous for snorkeling and swimming.

The Riviera Maya is today what Cancun was 20 years ago, but its popularity is exploding! In 1996, there were 4,000 total hotel rooms in the area; today there are 14,000 and it’s projected to reach 20,000 by the year 2002. What was once an enclave of predominantly European tourists is now being discovered by Americans turned off by Cancun’s over-development. Classic Travel will be taking three large groups in the year 2001 to enjoy all the pleasures this new destination has to offer. For individuals or groups, the Riviera Maya is the perfect tropical getaway to cure the winter blues. Call us today to plan your trip.
